REVITALIZED PRESARIO LAPTOP AS G3 ROUTER  by Michael 5/22/2005 at 20:13
I set up a retired laptop (PII-266, W2K) as a makeshift G3 router. I have internet from all devices at home and simply unplug the card and take it with me if I need access while mobile. The laptop is located out of sight and shows 100% signal strength with the build in antenna. Guess that will do and we can safely skip the purchase of any aftermarket gain antennas. I did some testing and unlike most, the Verizon Marketing department rather understated the performance. They say 400K-700K speed with bursts. I go on average over 850K down, frequent bursts to 1.2M and occasionally even higher burst. Ping latency is in the 250ms range, per Verizon the national average is 274ms. The upload speed is marginal but secondary for most use. Latency is good enough for Terminal Server, VoIP likely shows some delay. I tested a COX connection and the ping latency was for Google around 95ms, significantly better than G3 wireless. The performance is still below COX cable modem but may be even better than some DSL connections. Way to go, EV-DO earned his keep, CDMA will need to leave.

Now what? Here some cute ideas:

The idea to mount it in the car and have broadband within a few hundred feet from wherever you park your vehicle is very appealing. I have most hardware needed, like a laptop and 802.11 wireless gear. I may just do that one day if I get bored. Past experience however shows that I likely not get bored and I will never get beyond the current setup with the retired laptop acting as router for my home.
